Creating an Account

I received an e-mail request to do a letter of recommendation, but I do not have a username and password. Where do I get them?

LSAC does not create an account for you. If you do not already have an LSAC Applicant References account, you will need to create one in order to continue.

You will need to create an Applicant References account and choose a username and password in order to complete letters of recommendation. Follow the link in the e-mail and then select Create an Account.

Why do I need to create an account in order to complete a letter of recommendation? Can I complete one without creating an account?

If you are completing a letter of recommendation through the Applicant References website, we have to collect some information from you in order to maintain security and ensure confidentiality. Once you have created an account, it is easy to submit and manage all of your letters of recommendation, and to locate those that you have already submitted. There is no way to complete electronic letters of recommendation without providing the necessary account information.

Letters of recommendation can also be completed manually by mailing in the letter and associated form.

I created an account, but my username and password are not working when I try to log in. Why not?

Upon completing the account creation form and selecting Submit you should have seen a confirmation page. If you did not see this page, your account was not successfully created. If you did see the confirmation page, and you still cannot access your account, please contact Technical Support Services at 215.968.1393 or support@LSAC.org for assistance.

How do I get my username/password if my account email address is no longer valid?

If your e-mail has changed, then you will need to call the LSAC Technical Support Staff for assistance. The telephone number is 215-968-1393.

I created my account, but I can’t remember my username and/or password. What do I do?

Select the "Forgot my username or password" link to have that information e-mailed to you. If your e-mail has changed or if you still cannot log in after following the instructions, please contact Technical Support Services at 215.968.1393 or support@LSAC.org for assistance.

I created my Applicant References account, and I completed my first letter or recommendation. Another applicant has asked me to complete a letter of recommendation. How do I start?

Follow the link in the e-mail request and then log in to your existing account. Alternatively, you may log in to your existing account, then select the Add New LOR Reference button. Next, insert the reference number that was included in the e-mail request sent to you into the field that appears. Finally, select the Submit button. Either method will create a record for the new applicant, and you can begin to complete the letter of recommendation.

Why am I asked to select a Security access question?

Should you need to call LSAC for your username and password, we will use this information to assist in verifying your identity.

Is the Evaluation Service supported anymore?

The Evaluation Service was discontinued on August 7, 2016. Evaluators will no longer be able to fill out evaluations.

Completing a Letter of Recommendation

I deleted the e-mail I received before I realized I need the reference number that was listed in it. How do I retrieve this number?

Please contact the applicant and request that he/she/they resend you the e-mail from his/her/their LSAC account.

How will I know that my letter of recommendation was successfully submitted to LSAC?

You will receive an e-mail from LSAC confirming the receipt of your letter, and the status of the letter on the Home page of the Applicant References website will indicate “Submitted.”

Do I need to do more than one letter of recommendation for one applicant?

It depends on the needs of the applicant. You may be asked to complete one letter to be used by several law schools, or you may be asked to complete a letter for a specific law school. If you receive a request for more than one letter, you may wish to verify that the applicant actually needs more than one.

What if I do not want to complete a letter of recommendation?

The applicant has asked you to complete letter of recommendation because a law school to which the candidate is applying either requires or recommends that a letter of recommendation be submitted as part of the admission process. The applicant values your opinion.

If you choose not to complete the letter of recommendation, contact the applicant immediately so that he/she/they may make other arrangements for the letter of recommendation. LSAC does not contact the applicant if you choose not to respond to an applicant’s letter of recommendation request.

When does this letter of recommendation need to be completed?

Please complete the letter of recommendation as soon as possible, as the fulfillment of this request may be required in order to release the applicant’s law school report. Applicants must meet law school application deadlines, so your prompt attention to the applicant’s request is appreciated.

How do I create and upload my LOR?

Your LOR should be created using a word processing software package on your computer. After you save the document, you will be able to upload it into the Applicant References website.

What is a Letter of Recommendation Form? Where can I find it?

The form will be provided to you either in paper form from the candidate or via an attachment within an e-mail from LSAC. If you upload your letter of recommendation electronically on the Applicant References website, the LOR Form will be appended to the letter automatically after you verify your account information which is included on the electronic LOR Form. If you will be mailing the paper Letter of Recommendation directly to the Law School Admission Council and will not be submitting it electronically, the LOR Form will need to be completed and included with the Letter of Recommendation sent to LSAC. This LOR Form is used as a cover sheet to your Letter of Recommendation and will be used to associate it with the candidate’s account once it is received by LSAC.

Can I copy and paste my Letter of Recommendation instead of uploading?

No, the document must be uploaded on the Applicant References website or mailed to LSAC with the Letter of Recommendation Form provided to you by the candidate. If you uploaded the letter of recommendation on the website, the LOR Form will be included automatically after you verify the information that will be included on it.

I made a mistake on a letter of recommendation that I previously submitted for a law school applicant. How can I fix it?

If you have only made a minor error, like using "he" instead of "she" or "they" or you left off one point that can easily be added to an existing letter, use the Edit feature within the Electronic Letter of Recommendation (LOR) section to replace the existing letter with the corrected version of the letter. If reports have already been sent to the law schools, an update will be sent if the reporting period is still current. If you feel you need to substantially change a letter in support of an applicant, you should also use the Edit feature to replace your previous letter.

I have already submitted a letter of recommendation, but I have new information about a law school applicant that would better support his/her/their admission to law school. How can I get this new information added?

Use the Edit feature within the Electronic Letter of Recommendation (LOR) section to replace the existing letter with your new letter. If reports have already been sent to the law schools, an update will be sent if the reporting period is still current.
